Choose a test by specimen, target and timing
HIV testing can detect antibodies, antigen and antibodies together, or viral genetic material through NAT. Rapid describes a short result turnaround, not an identical detection window. Tests may use venous blood, finger-stick blood or oral fluid, depending on the product. [1]
Symptoms and appearance cannot establish HIV status. Testing connects people to prevention or care, but a test itself does not prevent HIV. No one needs to prove moral worth or disclose publicly to deserve respectful care. [2] [1] [3]
The window period is not the time to receive a report
CDC describes usual detection windows of 23–90 days for antibody tests, 18–45 days for laboratory antigen/antibody tests using venous blood, 18–90 days for rapid antigen/antibody finger-stick tests, and 10–33 days for NAT. These are not individual guarantees or a reason to delay seeking care. [1]
Recent PrEP or PEP can affect testing and follow-up. Discuss the latest exposure, symptoms and medicines with the provider. NAT is not automatically necessary or the best purchase for everyone, and routine adult screening rules are not infant diagnostic rules. [4] [5] [1]
Interpret screening and confirmation separately
An early negative result may require repeat testing and does not establish a partner’s status. Reactive screening results need confirmation. An invalid self-test is not negative; follow its instructions or seek provider-based testing. [1]
After a confirmed diagnosis, connect to care promptly without waiting for low CD4. Treatment can support a long and healthy life but does not guarantee identical outcomes for everyone. [2] [6]
Do not wait for a routine testing appointment after exposure
Seek PEP assessment as soon as possible after a possible HIV exposure and start when indicated within 72 hours. Do not wait for symptoms, all pending laboratory results or an online appointment. If more time has passed, still seek assessment and a testing plan. Do not substitute PrEP yourself. [5]
U=U means that a person taking ART who maintains viral suppression meeting care-team criteria does not transmit HIV through sex. It is not a cure, a result from one screening test, or a guarantee for breastfeeding or sharing injection equipment. It does not prevent other STIs. [7]
Ask about service arrangements and support
Confirm the test, result time, repeat plan, eligibility, costs and records with the actual service. Thailand’s DDC describes benefits through specified services; do not apply US prices, insurance rules or age recommendations as universal Thai policy. [8]
An HIV test alone generally does not require fasting, but other tests may have instructions. Ask before the visit and share medicine information without stopping prescribed treatment yourself. Support for fear, access or privacy concerns is available to discuss; no article can guarantee every interaction is judgment-free. [9]
