WORLD HIV DAY

FAQs

Short answers for organizers, schools, media, and organizations who want to make the most of 1 December

General What is World HIV Day? Tap to open answer

World HIV Day is a campaign hub for 1 December. We urge the global community to reclaim the day as World HIV Day — AIDS was our past, HIV is our present, and our future can be a world without HIV through science, human rights, and community. Our focus is themes, assets, event guides, and impact — not clinical manuals or daily news.

General How is this different from World AIDS Day? Tap to open answer

1 December remains the global observance founded in 1988 and coordinated with UNAIDS and WHO. World HIV Day uses that shared moment as a practical toolkit for organizers — to reclaim language around HIV, reduce stigma, and turn the day into measurable campaigns.

It is a call to end the epidemic by combining science with respect for human rights and by celebrating diversity — not by relying on fear. On 1 December we invite organizations, schools, media, and communities to commit to creating a world without HIV.
