Take the Rights Path – World AIDS Day 2024
As World AIDS Day 2024 approaches, the theme “Take the Rights Path” brings a renewed focus on human rights as the core to defeating AIDS. This global health challenge could be eradicated as a public health threat by 2030 if human rights remain central and communities take the lead.
Human Rights at the Heart of the Fight Against AIDS
Progress in the HIV response has gone hand-in-hand with advances in protecting human rights. This connection between health rights and HIV prevention, treatment, and care access is vital to the health of individuals and the strength of health systems. The recognition of the right to health, the fight against discrimination, and the effort to make services accessible and inclusive have created a stronger foundation for health equity around the world.
However, not everyone has been able to experience this progress. Gaps in human rights protections hinder global efforts to curb AIDS and have broader impacts on public health. Recently, a surge in rights abuses threatens to unravel years of progress, affecting millions who rely on inclusive health approaches. This World AIDS Day 2024, the message is clear: protecting human rights is not just a component of the solution – it is essential to ending AIDS.
Ending AIDS by Embracing Inclusion

Achieving an AIDS-free world requires reaching and including all people affected by or at risk for HIV. This means prioritizing those who have been marginalized or excluded. Such as women, girls, and key populations, including people from LGBTQ+ communities and other stigmatized groups. Upholding gender equality and creating inclusive environments that accept, respect, and support everyone is key to building effective HIV programs.
Unfortunately, discriminatory laws and policies prevent many people from accessing the services they need. Punitive laws that criminalize certain behaviors, stigmatize populations, or inhibit HIV advocacy and services create barriers. Particularly for those already on the margins. By addressing these restrictive policies, we can create a pathway toward an AIDS-free future that values every person’s right to health.
The Rights Path: A Road to End AIDS
The journey to ending AIDS is a journey of rights. Upholding the principles outlined in the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights – such as dignity, equality, and access for all. Provides a clear path forward. Repealing criminal laws that restrict human rights and implementing policies that protect every person, regardless of their background, are urgent steps on this path. The international human rights framework holds the force of law. Communities worldwide have a right to hold leaders accountable to these commitments.
UNAIDS’s “Take the Rights Path” campaign calls upon leaders to choose a path marked by rights, acceptance, and compassion. The campaign builds on this imagery to show that true change comes not from a moment but from a sustained movement. Activities will intensify in November, leading up to the release of the World AIDS Day Report on November 26, and will peak on World AIDS Day, December 1. The message will continue to echo through December and beyond.
A Call to Action

This World AIDS Day, everyone is call to protect health by protecting rights. Upholding human rights underpins an effective HIV response. Leaders are urged to “Take the Rights Path” and make a powerful commitment to ending AIDS.
